Electrolysis Care Guide: Before and After Your Treatment

Pre-Treatment Care

To achieve the best results from your electrolysis session, hair should be at least the length of a grain of rice. If the hair is too short, accessing and properly treating the follicle can be difficult or impossible. Once you begin electrolysis, avoid removing hair from the root. Waxing, threading, or tweezing disrupts the treatment process as we will have to wait until the new hairs grow back in. If you must use these methods, discontinue them at least 3–4 weeks prior to your appointment to allow sufficient growth. Similarly, depilatory creams should be avoided for at least 2 weeks, as they can dissolve hair slightly below the surface and interfere with treatment. If you prefer to manage hair between sessions, shaving or trimming is recommended, as these methods only remove hair at the surface and typically allow for quicker regrowth within 2–4 days. As treatment progresses, you’ll gain a better understanding of your personal hair growth cycle.‍ ‍

Equally important is preparing a clean, healthy skin surface. Please arrive with no makeup on the treatment area. While the skin will be wiped down prior to treatment, complete removal of all product residue cannot be guaranteed. In the days leading up to your appointment, use a gentle cleanser free of active exfoliating ingredients such as salicylic, lactic, glycolic, or mandelic acids. Avoid retinols, chemical exfoliants, and physical scrubs for at least 72 hours prior. If you’ve recently had a chemical peel, allow a few weeks for your skin to fully recover. Minimizing irritation is key, as a strong, healthy skin barrier promotes better healing and optimal results. Additionally, avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for at least 48 hours before your session. Proper hydration is also essential—drinking plenty of water helps improve both comfort and effectiveness during treatment. To prevent dehydration and sensitivity, limit caffeine and alcohol intake within 24 hours of your appointment.

Post-Treatment Care

After your treatment, it’s important to handle the area with care to support healing and prevent complications. Avoid touching the treated area with unwashed hands to reduce the risk of infection and pustules. Do not pick or scratch at any scabbing, as this is a natural part of the healing process; interfering with it can increase the risk of scarring and hyperpigmentation. Continue using gentle cleansers and lightweight moisturizers, and avoid applying makeup to prevent clogged pores or irritation. If the skin feels tender, a warm compress with Epsom salt can help soothe the area.

Limit sun exposure and avoid tanning to reduce the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Refrain from using any physical or chemical exfoliants for at least one week. While gentle cleansing with a soft cloth is acceptable to remove surface buildup, it’s best to allow the skin to heal undisturbed. Once redness and scabbing have resolved, you may gradually return to your regular skincare routine. Be diligent about applying sunscreen to any exposed treated areas. For body treatments, avoid tight clothing for a few days, as friction can irritate the skin and contribute to ingrown hairs. If you smoke, consider reducing or avoiding smoking especially after facial treatments. Smoking can impair healing by dehydrating the skin and clogging pores. Consistent pre- and post-care is essential to achieving the best possible results from your electrolysis treatments.
