How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Laser hair removal uses concentrated light energy that is absorbed by the pigment, or melanin, in the hair. The light energy is converted into heat, which travels down the hair and damages the structures responsible for producing the hair. With repeated treatments, this can reduce hair growth. Because laser relies on pigment in the hair, the best candidates traditionally have darker, coarser hairs that provide enough contrast against the surrounding skin. Modern laser technology has made treatment possible for a wider range of skin tones, but the combination of skin tone, hair color, hair thickness, and the particular laser being used still matters.
Laser hair removal is generally performed over a series of treatments because hair grows in different cycles. Not every follicle is in the ideal growth stage at the same time.
What Does "Permanent Hair Reduction" Mean?
One important distinction when comparing laser with electrolysis is the terminology used for laser treatments.
The FDA uses the term "permanent hair reduction" to describe a long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs that regrow after a treatment regimen. In other words, laser can reduce the amount of hair that grows back, but it should not be marketed as a guarantee that every treated follicle will be permanently gone. Some people experience very long-lasting results from laser, while most may experience regrowth and need maintenance treatments.
Facial hair can be particularly unpredictable because hormones can influence hair growth. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that laser results on a woman's face may not be permanent and that treatments may need to be repeated if hair regrows.
How Does Electrolysis Work?
Electrolysis works very differently from laser hair removal. Instead of treating a large area with light, electrolysis treats individual hair follicles one at a time. A very fine probe is inserted into the natural opening of the hair follicle. Electrical energy is then delivered to destroy the cells responsible for producing the hair.
There are three commonly used electrolysis modalities:
Galvanic electrolysis uses direct electrical current to create a chemical reaction inside the follicle that destroys the hair-growth cells.
Thermolysis uses high-frequency alternating current to generate heat that damages the hair-growth cells.
Blend electrolysis combines galvanic current and thermolysis.
Because electrolysis treats the follicle directly rather than relying on the color of the hair, it can be used on black, brown, blonde, red, white, gray, and very fine hairs.
That makes electrolysis especially useful for hairs that don't contain enough pigment for laser to effectively target.
Electrolysis vs. Laser: What's the Biggest Difference?
The biggest difference is what each method is targeting.
Laser primarily targets pigment in the hair and is designed to treat many hairs at once.
Electrolysis treats the individual hair follicle using electrical energy, which means hair color isn't the limiting factor.
This is why electrolysis is considered the permanent hair removal solution over laser.
What Are the Disadvantages of Laser Hair Removal?
Laser can be an excellent option for the right candidate, but it isn't perfect for everyone.
1. Laser needs pigment to target the hair
Because laser hair removal relies on pigment in the hair, white, gray, and very light hairs are generally not good candidates. Some red or very lightly pigmented hairs may also respond poorly depending on the technology and the individual. If the laser cannot adequately distinguish the hair from the surrounding skin, it cannot effectively deliver energy to the intended target.
This is one of the biggest advantages of electrolysis: electrolysis doesn't need pigment in the hair.
2. Skin tone and hair contrast matter
Laser technology has evolved significantly, and certain lasers can safely treat darker skin tones. However, the amount of pigment in the skin and the amount of pigment in the hair still need to be considered.
When there is less contrast between the skin and hair, treatment can become more challenging because the laser energy may also interact with pigment in the skin.
Darker skin tones can have a greater risk of burns and temporary or permanent changes in pigmentation if an inappropriate laser or treatment setting is used. This is why experience with the client's particular skin tone is extremely important.
3. Tattoos require special consideration
Laser hair removal should not be passed over tattooed skin. The pigment in a tattoo can absorb laser energy, potentially causing burns, skin injury, or changes to the tattoo. A qualified provider should identify tattooed areas and follow the appropriate safety protocol.
It's important to remember that the laser used for hair removal is different from a laser specifically selected for tattoo removal—the fact that lasers can be used for tattoo removal does not mean a hair-removal laser should be used directly over tattoo pigment.
4. There can be side effects
Laser hair removal can cause temporary redness and irritation. When performed incorrectly or with inappropriate settings, more serious complications such as burns, blisters, infection, or changes in skin pigmentation can occur.
There are also cases of laser causing paradoxical hypertrichosis , a phenomenon in which treated areas—or areas around them—develop increased or thicker hair growth instead of the desired reduction. This is more commonly seen in facial areas.
What Are the Disadvantages of Electrolysis?
Electrolysis has a major advantage: it permanently removes unwanted hair regardless of hair color.
However, the trade-off is that because each follicle is treated individually, electrolysis can take longer than laser when you're treating a very large area with a high density of hair.
Electrolysis also requires multiple appointments because hair grows in cycles. Not every hair will be available to treat at the same time.
Some clients experience a brief stinging, heat, or pinching sensation during treatment, although comfort levels vary from person to person and from one area of the body to another.
In other words, electrolysis can require more patience, but the goal is permanent hair removal rather than simply reducing the amount of hair.
Can You Get Laser Hair Removal and Electrolysis?
Yes, in many cases, laser and electrolysis can be used as part of the same overall hair-removal plan.
A common approach is to use laser to reduce a larger amount of dark, coarse hair, and then use electrolysis for the hairs that remain, particularly hairs that are too light, fine, gray, white, or otherwise unsuitable for laser.
For example, someone may have a large area of dark body hair that responds well to laser but later be left with scattered lighter hairs. Electrolysis can then be used to target those individual remaining follicles.
What About Combining Laser and Electrolysis on the Same Area?
Laser and electrolysis should not simply be performed on the same area without considering the treatment schedule and the condition of the skin.
After laser treatment, the skin needs time to recover. Your electrologist should also know when the area was last treated with laser and what type of treatment was performed.
The appropriate timing can vary depending on the area, the laser treatment, your skin's response, and the hair-growth cycle. Always discuss your treatment history with your electrologist before scheduling electrolysis following laser. It is also important that normal post-laser effects such as irritation and swelling are not mistaken for reactions caused by electrolysis.
